Information on dangers arising from provision of services through electronic means / electronic access channels
The basic dangers connected with using services via the Internet – including those offered by the PAGED Group companies as part of electronic access channels – are as follows:
- malicious software effect,
- unsolicited mail - spam.
The dangers pertain not only to computers, but also to other mobile devices, e.g. smartphones or tablets.
Phishing – fraudulent obtaining of data granting access to a given service (login, password, PIN), credit card numbers, etc. Most frequently, those are false notifications imitating messages from institutions distributed via electronic mail, where users are encouraged to log in false websites similar to original ones. The purpose is to capture access data.
Malicious software – programs which are used for criminal purposes or aim to cause harm to the user. They are for instance computer viruses and spying software.
A computer virus is a malicious programme which is transferred by saving an infected file on a data carrier, e.g. hard disk drive or USB flash drive. A virus aims to steal or remove data, distort functioning of a device or hijack control over a computer. Most frequently, electronic virus infection occurs upon downloading files from an untrusted online source or opening an attachment in electronic mail.
Spying software – programmes which monitor and send data on the user to the criminal in a hidden manner. It can accumulate and transfer both data found in the device or trace our actions, e.g. mouse movements or typed text.
Unwanted mail, or spam, are unsolicited or undesired electronic messages sent to many users at the same time. They frequently carry computer viruses, spying software or links to malicious or fabricated websites.
Basic safety rules
Each user of the website must take care of the safety of their devices which serve to access the Internet. Such a device should have an antivirus programme with an updated virus definition base, updated and safe version of web browser and enabled firewall. Moreover, T=the User should periodically check whether the operating system and software installed on the device are fully updated as attacks frequently take advantage of bugs found in installed software. Software producers strive to eliminate such dangers with updates.
Access data to the services offered in the Internet – e.g. logins, passwords, PINs, electronic certificates, etc. – must be protected. They must not be disclosed or stored in the device in a form which allows unauthorised access and reading.
Caution is advised when opening attachments or clicking on links in messages which we did not expect, e.g. from unknown senders. In the case of any doubts, it is recommended to acquaint oneself with the sender e.g. by phone.
It is advised to enable antiphishing filters in the web browser, i.e. tools checking whether a website being displayed is authentic and does not serve to obtain information by fraud, for instance by impersonating a person or institution.
Files should be downloaded only from trusted sources. We do not recommend installing software from unverified sources. This also pertains to mobile devices e.g. smartphones or tablets.
When using a home wireless network (Wi-Fi), a safe network access password which is difficult to break must be established. It is also recommended to use highest possible encrypting standards for wireless Wi-Fi networks which can be enabled on owned devices, e.g. WPA2.
